Last week’s event with Corey Hirsch was a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health and how crucial it is to encourage open dialogue. Corey’s honest and courageous story about his own struggles with mental health touched so many – but we need to ensure that conversations will continue well beyond a single night. We’ve already received numerous messages of gratitude from attendees, thanking us for raising awareness of such a relevant and timely issue.
The impact of the event has been especially strong among Windsor’s sports community. Both the University of Windsor hockey and basketball teams have taken the message to heart, pledging to include mental health discussions as part of their regular monthly communications. They’re also working to create safe spaces within their teams, aiming to break the stigma and encourage more open conversations about mental well-being.
In the coming months, PFG and Landscape Effects will also introduce bag tags for Windsor and Essex County hockey programs. These tags will carry messages of mental health awareness, serving as constant reminders for young athletes that support is always available. Eventually, this initiative will branch out to reach even more sports programs across the region, spreading the message further.
One of the most poignant moments of the evening came when an attendee shared an important insight with our own Parker Van Buskirk: “It’s not enough for people to open up—we must have the ability to actively listen and offer support.” This message captures the core of what we’re striving for—not just raising awareness, but ensuring that we’re equipped to listen with empathy and provide meaningful help.
While the event may be over, the conversation is far from finished. Corey’s story has sparked a much-needed dialogue, and we’re committed to continuing this work. With compassion, understanding, and the courage to listen, we can create a future where no one feels they have to face mental health challenges alone.
We thank everyone who joined us for this impactful event and look forward to building on the momentum we created together.
